Check under those sheets: Bedbugs may be digging…

Frequent business traveler Neil Kelley says bedbug bites were "all over my legs," and he was awakened in the middle of the night by a cockroach that crawled across his face at a resort two years ago.

"I itched like crazy," recalls Kelley, who was attending a food industry conference and volunteers information as a USA TODAY Road Warrior. "I would never go back to that hotel."

Staff at many hotels have heard guests like Kelley complain about bedbugs.

"Most chains have experienced bedbugs," says John Barcay, a senior scientist at Ecolab,a company with a pest-management division that services hotels. "Bedbugs are more prevalent in hotels with high occupancy rates and in high tourist areas."

Barcay says a hotel's sanitation standards are unrelated to bedbug infestations, and any hotel — whether budget or luxury — can have bedbugs. They are brought into hotels in guests' belongings, he says.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says bedbug infestations usually occur near where people sleep — in hotels, apartments and other dwellings — and America is one of many countries "now experiencing an alarming resurgence" in the bedbug population.

Experts suspect the recent resurgence, the CDC says, is linked to several factors, including bedbugs' increased resistance to pesticides and increased international and domestic travel.

The good news for travelers is that bedbugs — parasites that feed on human blood — are not known to transmit disease. Their bites, which affect each person differently, can cause itching and loss of sleep, the CDC says.

The bites can also cause allergic reactions, including a "whole-body reaction," and lead to skin infections, the agency says, while some people may not show any physical signs of a bite.

Jerry Barnes, the general manager of the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Ill., says bedbugs are a problem throughout the hotel industry.

"I have worked for many hotels in the past and dealt with bedbugs for 20! years," Barnes says. "All 14 hotels I have worked for have, at one time or another, incurred bedbugs. Any hotel who says it has never encountered bedbugs is not telling the truth."

Barnes says the Pheasant Run Resort has contracted a pest-control company since 2008 and will institute a program requiring quarterly inspection of each guest room for bedbugs.

A website, The Bedbug Registry, says it has received about 20,000 reports of bedbugs in hotels and apartments since it launched in 2006. The website, which states it hasn't confirmed any reports, shows that bedbugs have been reported in rooms of nearly all hotel chains, including budget and luxury ones.

Though bedbugs are a common problem, many hotels and guests erroneously report bedbug infestations, Barcay says. He estimates that more than half of the times hotels and motels have hired Ecolab to eradicate bedbugs, there were no bedbugs.

A survey last year by the National Pest Management Association and the University of Kentucky found that 75% of the 251 pest-management companies surveyed said they treated at least one hotel or motel for bedbugs in 2012. More than 95% of the companies said they treated bedbug infestations in at least one apartment/condominium and one single-family home.

Kathryn Potter, a spokeswoman for the American Hotel & Lodging Association, says "hoteliers have long been aware and vigilant of this particular pest."

Top Promising Companies For 2016

The trade group provides information and resources to help hotel managers identify and treat bedbug problems, she says.

Road Warrior Tim Orris lives in hotels year-round and says he has been bitten by bedbugs in three hotels or motels in the past three years.

Last year, he says he was bitten in the eyelid by a bedbug at a motel in Maryland.

The three incidents, he says, have changed his hotel routine. He now keeps his suitcase in his car ! and takes! into the hotel a change of clothes in a plastic bag. The next day, he puts on the clothes in the plastic bag and seals the previous day's clothes in the bag. The used clothes are then brought to a dry cleaner.

George Banta, the owner of Super 8 in Middletown, N.Y., says bedbugs are a problem for hotels and other businesses.

Banta says his hotel takes "preventative actions" to decrease the chances of bedbug issues, including training housekeeping staff how to detect the pests, installing protective covers on mattresses and regularly using an exterminator to treat guest rooms.

Such measures "do not guarantee that a business will never have to deal with the issue of bedbugs," because they are brought into the hotel from outside, he says.

Despite hotel guests' reports about bedbugs and his company's efforts to eradicate them, Barcay says bedbugs won't spread disease, and traveler shouldn't be overly worried about them.

"Don't change your travel plans," Barcay says. "Bedbugs are only in a very small fraction of hotel rooms."

Why the Dow Jones Jumped Despite Weak Economic Data

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is up today despite weak economic data in the U.S. and China. The stock market jumped around noon as Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen gave a speech at the Economics Club of New York. As of 1:15 p.m. EDT the Dow was up 117 points, or 0.72%, to 16,380. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) was up 0.66% to 1,855.

There were two U.S. economic releases today and three releases in China last night:

None of the U.S. reports were encouraging, but the Chinese reports showed the economy did not slow as much as many had feared. The two key reports here are U.S. housing starts and Chinese GDP growth. Housing starts rose to a seasonally adjusted annualized 946,000, up from a revised 920,000 in February but well below analyst expectations of 990,000. Building permits, a leading indicator of housing starts, fell by 2.4% to 990,000, missing expectations of 1.02 million. Housing-market activity has slowly been getting stronger since the depths of 2009 but is still well below the levels seen a decade ago. Today's data just shows that the U.S. housing market continues to slowly strengthen.

US New Housing Permits Chart

US New Housing Permits data by YCharts.

Meanwhile, China's economy has been propped up in recent years by politically directed government lending and infrastructure spending, which has led to large imbalances in the economy. These, coupled with restrictions on investment, have led to a housing bubble, as well as a credit bubble. The Chinese government has begun taking steps to mitigate these through actions to raise interbank lending rates and restrict unconventional lending. The effects were seen this past quarter in China's first-ever default of publicly sold bonds. Previously, government organizations would take all possible measures to prevent any default.

The restrictions on credit were expected to slow the economy's growth, but the Communist party is still targeting 7.5% GDP growth this year. However, recent import and export data has been far worse than expectations, causing analysts to lower forecasts for this quarter's annualized growth to 7.3%. Chinese GDP came in slightly above that at 7.4%, while retail sales and industrial production also beat expectations. Given that China is the world's second-largest economy, its economic data has a direct effect on many Dow stocks that have significant operations around the world.

The Dow Jones spiked upward at noon following Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's speech at the Economic Club of New York. Yellen said the members of the Federal Open Market Committee believed the recent U.S. economic slowdown was the result of the harsh winter and did not represent a general slowing of economic activity. Yellen said it was "quite plausible" that the U.S. economy could return to full employment and stable prices within the next three years. The FOMC views "full employment" as an unemployment rate near 5.5% -- though that's not entirely accurate, given that many people are simply not looking for jobs or have part-time jobs, which is not reflected in the headline number. Yellen went on to talk about the challenges the Fed and the economy face and explained how the Fed would continue to communicate through its forward guidance; the Fed believes monetary policy is more effective when people understand what the Fed plans to do. Yellen's expectations that the economy will continue grow stronger pushed the Dow up at noon.

Top Cheap Companies For 2016: Uranium Resources Inc.(URRE)

Uranium Resources, Inc. engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and mining of uranium properties, using the in situ recovery or solution mining process. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

If you listened to my bullish calls from December 27th and/or February 24th about Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG), then congratulations - you're now up as much as 50%, depending on when you stepped into a trade, and which stock you chose. Now get out. See, as well as URZ and URG have done and are doing (URRE not so much), it looks like the short-term rally I first spotted a little more than a couple of months ago has fully run its course, and now these names are setting up a pullback.

  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap nuclear fuel stock USEC Inc (NYSE: USU) is up some 300% this week meaning its worth taking a closer look at the company along with the performance potential uranium or nuclear stock peers Uranium Resources, Inc (NASDAQ: URRE), Denison Mines Corp (NYSEMKT: DNN), Ur-Energy Inc (NYSEMKT: URG) and Uranerz Energy Corp (NYSEMKT: URZ).

  • [By James E. Brumley]

You know, were it just Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE) or just Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG) or just Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ) making a decided bullish move, I might be able to dismiss it. Similarly, if URZ had only been moving higher for one or two days (or only URG or only URRE), it might be easy to not be impressed. Neither of those situations has been the actual case, however. All three stocks have been moving! upward for several days now, quite a bit, on noticeably higher volume. There's something "going on", as it were, and if prior group-wide movements are any clue, it's the kind of move worth tapping into.

  • [By John Udovich]

Since the start of the week, small cap nuclear fuel stock USEC Inc (NYSE: USU) more than doubled for investors, something that has not happened for investors in uranium stocks like Uranium Resources, Inc (NASDAQ: URRE), Denison Mines Corp (NYSEMKT: DNN), Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT: URG) and Uranerz Energy Corp (NYSEMKT: URZ). To recap: USEC Inc closed at the $6 level on Friday, but then it surged to the $15 level on Monday only to open at the $10 level on Tuesday when it ultimately closed at $12.46. So what in the world is going on with USEC Inc and is it time to revisit nuclear fuel and uranium stocks?

Top 5 Penny Stocks To Invest In 2015

In this edition of The Motley Fool's "Ask a Fool" series,Motley Foolanalysts Jason Moser and Brendan Mathews take a question from a reader who asks, " What are some ideas on taking advantage of the future of graphene?"

According to Brendan, there are no large, reputable publicly traded companies that will directly benefit from the potential of graphene. Of course, there is no shortage of penny stock promoters that have surfaced to capitalize on the hype (and take advantage of individual investors).

Unfortunately, a large number of penny stocks and micro-cap stocks tend to work out badly for investors. Many of them have limited business operations and their "potential" is just hype generated by unscrupulous promoters. Thus, Brendan and Jason suggest treading with caution -- or better yet, avoid investing in any graphene-related penny stocks. Investing in penny stocks, whether related to graphene or not, is the most sure-fire way to lose money in the market.

JH: One of the areas where the U.S. for decades has been the leading technological power is in small nuclear reactors. We've used them on our aircraft carriers and on our nuclear submarines safely and efficiently. The U.S. has an advantage in understanding small modular nuclear reactors. One of the companies that we have followed for a long time that's working on that is Babcock & Wilcox Co. (BWC). There's also Fluor Corp. (FLR), which is working on small modular nuclear reactors. President Obama and the Department of Energy are funding research on the implementation of small modular nuclear reactors.

Flexpoint manufactures, and has jointly developed, six products that are being sold and supplied to customers. Flexpoint owns nine patents, including patents on specific devices that use the Bend Sensor. The Company works with various Tier 1 (major) automotive suppliers on a variety of products that are in various stages of development and implementation.

Bend Sensor Technology

Flexpoint owns the patent rights to the Company's Bend Sensor technology through Sensitron, Inc. (Sensitron), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Company. The Bend Sensor is a potentiometer bend sensor product consisting of a coated substrate, such as plastic, that changes electrical conductivity as it is bent in a consistent manner. Electronic systems can connect to this sensor and measure in detail the amount of bending or movement that occurs in a predictable manner. A potentiometer functions through the means of metal contacts swiping or rubbing across a resistive element. Flexpoin Bend Sensor potentiometer is a single layer with no mechanical assembly that makes it more reliable and smaller, and lighter in weight.

Automotive Products

Flexpoint has developed comfort seat for automobiles utilizing its patented Bend Sensortechnology and is working with Tier 1 suppliers on development of the seat and various seat related controls. Through a joint development arrangement with a Tier1supplier Flexpoint developed and delivered prototypes of the seat. Automobile manufacture has partnered with a Tier 1 supplier and is in the final stages of evaluating Flexpoint patented horn switch to replace their existing technology. The automobile manufacturer is also evaluating the use of the Bend Sensor as a switch to open rear! doors of SUV's and as a seat belt reminder (SBR). While working with various Tier 1 automotive suppliers the Company has developed and tested a SBR sensor that alerts the occupant of an automobile to fasten his/her seatbelt.

Flexpoint is working with multiple manufacturers to replace existing devices in the marketplace with a system superior in performance. Four separate and independent automotive suppliers and OEMs tested the Bend Sensor device for use in pedestrian impact detection device. The tests proved that the Bend Sensor device was able to detect impact with a human leg and in the event of an accident and trigger the desired safety response. Flexpoint has also developed a crash sensor, which is a series of sensors mounted in strategic places on the side and door panels of an automobile to detect an impact, as well as the speed, direction and force of the impact. This allows an onboard computer to deploy side air bags where needed. Using the same concept as the Company's automotive seat belt reminder (SBR), this device monitors cinema theater's paying customers and identifies available seats. Flexpoint has supplied a theater management firm with several prototype sensors, which have undergone extensive testing for this application.

As of December 31, 2012, Flexpoint developed and produced 20 prototype medical beds that assist in the management of bed sores. Using the Bend Sensor technology and accompanying electronics the bed is able to determine the position of the person in the bed and how they are moved. The Company has developed a vibration sensor, a rupture disc/bursting disc utilizing the Bend Sensor as the detection/alarm element of a rupture disc device, an infant bed cover using its patented sensors that is used to monitor infants in the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), toys and video gaming devices, and sports applications.

Non-cyclical consumer goods & services shares climbed around 0.22 percent in trading on Friday. For the calendar year-to-date, the Fund Investor Class returned +2.9% compared to +8.3% for the S&P 500 and +7.0% for the Russell 3000. DIRECTV (DTV) (+25% on AT&T buyout offer), Martin Marietta Materials (MLM) (+30% on its acquisition of Texas Industries) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) (+12%, and in the news for its hostile takeover battle for Allergan) benefited from the robust deal environment in different ways. Interval Leisure (IILG) (-37%) was the largest detractor and one of our few companies where business value declined. Our earnings estimates fell roughly 15% when Interval announced that four large, multi-year corporate relationships renewed at less favorable rates in their timeshare exchange business. We think the stock has overreacted to this news, and the company continues to add strategically to its platform. Other small-cap stocks that detracted from year-to-date results included XO Group (XOXO) (-25%) and Redwood Trust (RWT) (-11%). Broader themes behind the relative shortfall include our overweight position in consumer discretionary companies (the weakest sector in the market year-to-date), our lack of near-term big winners in health care and technology (the strongest sectors in the market year-to-date) and our conservative portfolio positioning in the first half of the year. We are not pleased with recent results. It is natural for our concentrated investing style to be out of step with the market at times.

Hot Gas Utility Companies To Invest In 2016

Hot Gas Utility Companies To Invest In 2016: Silver Bay Realty Trust Corp (SBY)

Silver Bay Realty Trust Corp., incorporated on June 29, 2012, is focused on the acquisition, renovation, leasing and management of single-family properties. The Company generates all of its revenue by leasing its portfolio of single-family properties.

As of September 30, 2012, the initial portfolio consisted of more than 2,540 single-family properties. As of September 30, 2012, Two Harbors owned a portfolio of approximately 1,660 single-family properties through its wholly owned subsidiary, Two Harbors Property Investment LLC. The Company is managed by PRCM Real Estate Advisers LLC.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

The biggest new holdings are Comcastand Prudential Financial. Other new holdings of interest include Silver Bay Realty Trust (NYSE: SBY  ) , a hybrid mortgage REIT (real estate investment trust). Spun off by Two Harbors Investment, Silver Bay will focus on single-family homes, profiting from foreclosures. The company is worth watching, especially with a housing recovery under way, even though some question the recovery. In its last quarter, Silver Bay acquired 1,200 single-family properties, bringing its portfolio to 4,600. Its overall occupancy rate is 53%, but 92% among its stabilized properties.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

For Wall Street types, single-family foreclosures can be bought cheaply and in bulk, then fixed up and rented. Companies like the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) and Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) have been very active in this market, with the former purchasing 16,000 homes just last year, and the latter ramping up its own portfolio to approximately 7,000. This new industry has also spawned fresh entrants from the REIT field, Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) and Altisource Residential, (NYSE: RESI  ) two trusts that were spun off earlier this year from parent ! companies Two Harbors Investment (NYSE: TWO  ) and Altisource Portfolio Solutions (NASDAQ: ASPS  ) , specifically to take advantage of the boom in the foreclosure-to-rental market.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

2013 is starting off sweet for the hybrid REIT
Despite missing earnings per share estimates by $0.03, Two Harbors managed to keep its net interest spread at 2.9%, with no decrease from the previous quarter. The trust took a hit on book value of $0.35 -- not too disappointing considering the special Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) dividend of $1.01 Two Harbors passed around with its own $0.32 payout, about six weeks ago.

5 Best Trucking Stocks To Invest In 2015

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Trading stocks that trigger major breakouts can lead to massive profits. Once a stock trends to a new high, or takes out a prior overhead resistance point, then it's free to find new buyers and momentum players that can ultimately push the stock significantly higher.

One example of a successful breakout trade I flagged recently was trucking player YRC Worldwide (YRCW), which I featured in Dec. 12's "5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar" at $9.71 share. I mentioned in that piece that shares of YRCW had recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $7.06, $7.20 and $7.44 a share. Following that bottom, shares of YRCW were starting to reverse its downtrend and enter a new uptrend, since the stock was moving higher from its low of $7.06 to its recent high of $10.50 a share. That move was quickly pushing shares of YRCW within range of triggering a major breakout trade above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.63 to $10.87 a share.

Guess what happened? Shares of YRCW triggered that breakout the following trading session with monster upside volume. This stock has continued to uptrend and soar higher since taking out those key resistance levels with bullish upside volume flows. Shares of YRCW tagged a recent high on Dec. 23 of $20.58 a share. That represents a massive gain of over 100% in just a few weeks for anyone who bought this breakout. As you can see, trading breakouts that trigger with strong volume can produce monster profits in very short timeframes.

Nash-Finch Company was founded in 1885 and is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

What: Shares of Nash-Finch (NASDAQ: NAFC  ) and Spartan Stores (NASDAQ: SPTN  ) jumped as much as 16% and 15%, respectively, after Spartan said it would buy Nash-Finch, primarily for its military stores.

  • [By Alex Planes]

Sysco has avoided the margin compression suffered by chicken producers Tyson (NYSE: TSN  ) and Cal-Maine Foods (NASDAQ: CALM  ) and which was more deeply felt by smaller food-service operator Nash-Finch (NASDAQ: NAFC  ) . (It is omitted from this chart due to its drop into outright negative operating margin territory (a decline of roughly 250% in two years.) However, fellow food-service company United Natural Foods (NASDAQ: UNFI  ) has actually improved its margins, and restaurant chains both large and small (well, mid-size) have done an admirable job of holding the margin line in the face of rising input costs. So it appears that scale alone isn't enough to help Sysco outrun the rising costs of its products.

Getty Images From a door-to-door selling icon stocking up on blush after a disappointing quarter to several hotel chains checking in with strong occupancy trends, here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Hotels -- Winners Hoteliers were apparently hopping during the first quarter. Despite the iffy weather and the equally iffy economy, the leading chains reporting this week posted surprisingly robust activity. Revenue per available room is a key metric because it tracks occupancy levels as well as prevailing overnight rates. The industry's doing well when RevPAR is positive, and that's just what we saw with this week's reports. Choice Hotels (CHH), Marriott (MAR), and Hyatt (H) clocked in with RevPAR increases of 5.6 percent, 6.3 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively. Twitter (TWTR) -- Loser Shares of Twitter hit an all-time low this week after the company posted disappointing user growth. Sure, the "all-time low" remark needs to be accompanied by the caveat that Twitter has only been trading publicly for less than six months. It's still a grim milestone for last year's most anticipated debutante. Twitter's revenue growth was fine, propelled by the recent success of its monetization initiatives. Its outlook was upbeat. However, the one thing that haunted investors this week was that Twitter had just 14 million more unique monthly visitors than it had a quarter earlier. That kind of sequential uptick would've impressed at most companies, but Twitter trades at a juicy premium to the market. #Letdown. J.C. Penney (JCP) -- Winner The struggling department store operator isn't out of the woods just yet, but at least one supplier is offering up encouraging insight. PVH (PVH) was presenting at an investor conference in Miami earlier in the week when its CEO offered up an encouraging perspective. "The Penney's business is running on or ahead of plan and given what their sales trends are," said CEO Manny Chirico,

From a struggling department store chain delivering better than expected financial results to a popular photo-printing services provider botched a mass mailing, here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Keurig Green Mountain (GMCR) -- Winner Coca-Cola (KO) is apparently a coffee addict. The world's leading beverage company turned heads earlier this year when it paid $1.25 billion for a 10 percent stake in Keurig Green Mountain. This week it announced that it's bumping its stake to 16 percent, paying a much higher price for the new shares. Keurig Green Mountain is the company behind the country's most popular single-serve coffee maker. In a few months it plans to enter the carbonated beverage market with Keurig Cold. Coca-Cola is on board to provide soft drink flavors for the machine, and now the company has a greater stake in seeing that Keurig Cold is successful. Shutterfly (SFLY) -- Loser "There's nothing more amazing than bringing a new life into the world," begins a promotion that Shutterfly mailed out this week. "As a new parent you're going to find more to love, more to give and more to share -- we're here to help you every step of the way." Shutterfly intended for the mailing to go out to customers who had recently ordered birth announcements, reminding them that matching thank you cards are now in order for the family and friends who provided gifts for the new baby. The problem here is that the marketing email went out to a far wider base of Shutterfly registered users. Twitter and Facebook were alive with folks joking or complaining about the mishap. It was an amusing blunder for most recipients, but it's easy to see how this kind of missive could hit hard to others. Netflix (NFLX) -- Winner We're apparently a nation of Netflix addicts. Finally, shares ofShutterfly (NASDAQ: SFLY  ) were soaring today, finishing up 15% after reports emerged that the company was looking to selling itself. According toBloomberg, the digital photo-specialist, which makes albums and household products with personal digital images, is in the early stages of seeking a buyer, considering private-equity firms, e-commerce companies and web storage businesses. Shutterfly has hired Qatalyst Partners, a boutique investment firm, to help with its search. After many years of profits, the company has seen its bottom line turn into the red recently despite revenue growth in the teens. That struggle and the number of acquisitions among Internet companies recently may explain its search for a buyer. There were no details on a potential buyer, but further reports could push shares higher as we learn more about a possible sale.

Advisors' Opinion:

Since 2008's implosion from the stock, the interest in Savient Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:SVNT) has been waning. There was a brief burst of bullishness in September of last year, which stirred the bullish pot a little. But, when SVNT started to fade in October of that year - just as quickly as it had perked up - what lingering hopes there were for the stock finally started to melt away. By the middle of this year, pretty much everyone had written Savient Pharmaceuticals off as a lost cause. Big mistake. Over the last few days, SVNT has almost wiggled its way buck into a bullish zone.

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

The broader comments are a boon for the industry, explaining why competitors like Avalon Rare Metals (NYSEMKT: AVL  ) traded up nearly 10% and Rare Earth Elements (NYSEMKT: REE  ) surged over 12% on the news. If industrial demand for rare-earth elements is stabilizing and beginning to build, then all three of these companies will benefit. High inventories in the hands of customers have been a major drag on prices for an extended period, and If this trend is reversing, Molycorp should see continuing strength in the later part of the year.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Back on September 24th I pointed out how Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (NYSEMKT:AVL) was a superior stock pick to Rare Element Resources Ltd (NYSEMKT:REE), even if only for short-term technical reasons. Either way, however, the rebound in the prices of most rare earth metals was going to be good for both REE and AVL. The one name conspicuously missing from the bunch, of course, was Molycorp Inc. (NYSE:MCP). Well, you can finally add MCP to the buy list as well. In fact, the different path it took to technical soundness may well make Molycorp the best pick of the bunch right now.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Rare Element Resources Ltd (NYSEMKT:REE) has been getting more than its fair share of attention of late.... bullish attention, to be precise. The stock's benefited from the attention too, with REE shares up 58% in the past two and a half weeks. As compelling as that move is, however, it's not the best rare earth bet at this point. If you like Rare Element Resources, you'll love Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (NYSEMKT:AVL). Unlike REE, AVL isn't already overbought. Indeed, it's just getting started.

First and foremost, it's worth noting that the undertow pushing Avalon Rare Metals and Rare Element Resources Ltd shares upward is doing the same for most rare earth metal miners. That undertow is simply a broad price improvement for rare earth elements. Since July's low, neodymium ("the biggie) prices have advanced from $75/kg to the current price of $103/kg, and are still going strong. Some observers have already suggested the proverbial bottom has been made, and their arguments actually hold up pretty well. That's why REE and AVL have been such - no pun intended - hot commodities of late... this rebound in rare element prices seems to be the real deal.

So what's wrong with Rare Element Resources Ltd that isn't wrong with Avalon Rare Metals? In simplest terms, AVL isn't overbought right now, while REE is.

With just a quick glance at the chart of Rare Element Resources Ltd we can see that shares had already been hot, gapping higher back on the 16th, yet never looking back. Now it's up huge, and on huge volume. In fact, today's big 11% pop will be the highest volume day we've seen in months.

On the surface it seems bullish, but this is one of those "too much of anything is still too much" situations. REE may be hot, but it's well overextended already, and today's extreme bullishness may be actually be a blowoff top.

AVL, on the flipside, isn't nearly as overextended right now. In fact, it appears to just be getting started. Though it to

Not the time to bet on rare-earth materials
There's no question that the rare-earth mineral space has peaked, and that it has a lot of questions to surmount. Despite Wall Street's euphoria over the stock, I'd be cautious about Molycorp and would definitely stay away from speculative rare-earth plays Rare Element Resources (NYSEMKT: REE  ) and Avalon Rare Metals (NYSEMKT: AVL  ) , who don't even have the revenue Molycorp is generating.

Top 10 Prefered Companies To Buy For 2015: Ambit Biosciences Corp (AMBI)

Ambit Biosciences Corporation, incorporated on May 17, 2000, is a biopharmaceutical company. The Company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of drugs to treat unmet medical needs in oncology, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases by inhibiting kinases that are important drivers for those diseases. The Company lead drug candidate, quizartinib, is in Phase IIb clinical development in patients with relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The Company second drug candidate in clinical development, AC410, is a potent, selective, orally-administered, small molecule inhibitor of Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) that has potential utility for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The Company third program consists of two selective small molecule compounds, AC708 and AC855, which inhibit the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF1R), a receptor tyrosine kinase.

Quizartinib

The Company lead drug candidate, quizartinib, is a once-daily, orally-administered, potent and selective inhibitor of FLT3, a validated target in the treatment of AML, and is in Phase IIb clinical development. The FLT3-ITD mutation acts like a power switch that causes leukemic cells, or blasts, to spread more aggressively and grow back more rapidly following chemotherapy, conferring an especially poor survival outcome. Quizartinib is designed to turn off this switch. The Company is developing a companion diagnostic test with Genoptix Medical Laboratory, a Novartis company, to identify FLT3-ITD positive patients.

AC410

The Company advanced drug candidate, AC410, is a potent, selective, orally-administered, small molecule inhibitor of JAK2, which has potential utility for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Signaling through JAK controls the activation, proliferation and survival of various types of immune cells, and overactivation of such cells can exacerbate a range of normal inflammatory processes, resulting i! n inflammation. The Company initial JAK2 drug candidate, AC430, is a racemic mixture (50/50) of two enantiomers (mirror images), AC410 and AC409, and was studied in a Phase I clinical trial.

CSF1R Program

The Company is developing two potent and exquisitely selective small molecule compounds, AC708 and AC855 that both inhibit CSF1R and have potential utility in oncology, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Signaling through CSF1R controls the activation, proliferation and survival of macrophages, which are key mediators of immune system function and over-activation of macrophages, may result in exacerbation of certain diseases.

The Company competes with Abbvie Inc., Akinion Pharmaceuticals AB, Amgen Inc., ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc., AROG Pharmaceuticals, LLC, ArQule, Inc., Astellas, AstraZeneca plc, Bayer AG, Celgene Corporation, Daiichi-Sankyo Company Limited, Galapagos NV, GlaxoSmithKline plc, Incyte Corporation, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly and Company, Novartis, Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Pfizer, Rigel Pharmaceuticals, Inc., F. Hoffman-LaRoche Ltd, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated.

Advisors' Opinion:

Ambit Biosciences Corp. (AMBI) shares fell more than 37% to $8 in moderate volume. The small-cap biotech said it will not file an accelerated approval application with the Food and Drug Administration for its leukemia drug quizartinib after the agency disagreed with the company about the use of certain study data to support the drug efficacy.
