Hot Gold Stocks For 2014

Despite the disaster that is its sales strategy, not to mention the apparent confusion that reigns in the C-suite, J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) stock is at least protected by one lesson learned: Don't give your CEO a golden parachute.

Even though ex-CEO Ron Johnson was unceremoniously dumped by the board of directors in favor of once-and-future chief executive Myron Ullman, he didn't have any special clauses that would make his landing especially cushyshould he separate from the company. Not that we need to cry over his pay package, either, but unlike with Penney's former president Michael Francis, the board didn't encrust Johnson's severance pay with gold and diamonds.

Francis, you may recall, was hired in October 2011 and left a mere eight months later, but took with him a fairly rich deal: He got $4.7 million in termination pay, $3.6 million in severance, kept his $12 million signing bonus (which was supposed to be prorated if he left early), and $2 million in stock awards. That certainly eases any anguish he might have felt for presiding over the dismal retailer for less than a year.

10 Best New Stocks To Invest In 2015: Pershing Gold Corp (PGLC)

Pershing Gold Corporation, incorporated on August 2, 2007, is a gold and precious metals exploration company. The Company is pursuing exploration and development opportunities primarily in Nevada. It is focused on exploration at its Relief Canyon properties in Pershing County in northwestern Nevada. None of the Company properties contain proven and probable reserves, and all of its activities on all of its properties are exploratory in nature. The Company seeks properties with known mineralization that are in an advanced stage of exploration and have previously undergone some drilling but are under-explored. It is focused on exploration of the Relief Canyon properties, recommissioning the Relief Canyon gold processing facility and, if economically feasible, commencing mining at the Relief Canyon Mine.

Relief Canyon Mine Property

The Company Relief Canyon properties totals approximately 25,000 acres and consists of approximately 940 owned unpatented mining claims, 120 owned millsite claims, 170 leased unpatented mining claims, and leased and subleased private lands. The Company drilled 44 holes for approximately 28,500 feet in 2013. This drilling was on land adjacent to the current deposit and focused on extending and upgrading the existing deposit. In January 2013 the Company reported 32,541,000 tons of mineralized material at an average grade of 0.017 ounces of gold per ton and a cut-off grade of 0.0046 ounces of gold per ton.

IAMGOLD Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the exploration, development, and production of mineral resource properties worldwide. It primarily explores for gold, silver, zinc, copper, niobium, diamonds, and other metals. Its advanced exploration and development projects include the Westwood project in Canada; and the Quimsacocha project, which consists of 3 mining concessions covering an aggregate area of approximately 8,030 hectares in Ecuador. The company was formerly known as IAMGOLD International African Mining Gold Corporation and changed its name to IAMGOLD Corporation in June 1997. IAMGOLD Corporation was founded in 1990 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Blair]

IAMGOLD (IAG) is one of my favorite gold stocks principally because it is a relatively high cost producer with long lived mines. That paradox arises since high cost producers have the most volatility when gold prices change. If they are operating close to break even, a relatively small rise in gold prices makes them quite profitable. Conversely, when prices fall they bleed all over the floor.

But even with markets trading in a range since July, there was plenty of action in individual stocks, even as earnings season nears an end. CME Group (CME), for instance, gained 4% to $74.44, its biggest move two months, after the exchange operator said trading volume in its Brent crude oil futures contracts climbed above 100,000 for the first time on Aug. 8. CME is trying to woo traders away from IntercontinentalExchange’s (ICE) dominant futures contract. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Monica Gerson]

First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG) is estimated to post its Q1 earnings at $0.10 per share on revenue of $63.35 million.

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (NYSE: RDY) is expected to report its Q4 earnings at $0.52 per share.

On that theory, hard-hit energy stocks that have suffered from the crash in oil prices could stand to benefit. Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR  ) , for instance, lost more than half its value in the last four months of 2014 as the exploration and production company with a huge stake in the Bakken shale play in North Dakota suffered from worries about the sustainability of its long-term growth in light of falling oil. Similarly, many small-cap gold and silver miners struggled through a poor 2014, and so companies like First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG  ) and IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  ) arguably have more to gain from a January bounce.

It is no secret that precious metals companies have been taking a pounding for some time now. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) and iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) , the gold and silver ETFs, have been hard hit and operating companies like First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) and Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) have been hit even harder. Through all of these struggles, and in some cases because of them, one precious metals company continues to look attractive for the long term: Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) .

The company was founded in 1984 and is based in Littleton, Colorado.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

    Clash of the titans
When bears are raging on the gold bullion market, it's not surprising to see gold stocks getting mauled as well. Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  ) was the biggest loser in the sector, losing a quarter of its market cap on no company-specific news, though a report last Friday indicated that a large number of hedge funds had recently dumped their positions in the mid-tier miner. Yet it wasn't all that much better among the majors, either, as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) fell almost 13% and Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC  ) was down 14%.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  )
It's simple physics: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. When gold prices nosedived earlier this week, gold miners with historically higher operating costs took the brunt of the hit. For the most part, that meant that development-stage miners, and those operating in Africa, where labor and political costs make cost-effective mining a challenge, took it on the chin. Possibly no stock was hammered more than Golden Star Resources, a gold miner in Ghana, which lost about one-quarter of its value on Monday alone.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] ating price of the commodity, along with the geopolitical risks involved in mining in African nations such as Ghana, are just two of the obstacles the firm is facing. In addition, as one of the smallest gold mining firms in the industry, with a market cap of just $122 million, Golden Star has had a very difficult time financing its latest expansion projects. With share prices tumbling towards all-time lows, gurus such as Steven Cohen, Chuck Royce and Arnold Schneider have already sold out their positions in the troubled firm.

Why Have Gurus Lost Faith in Golden Star?

Despite aggressive expansion over the past decade, the Toronto-based gold mining firm has not been able to take advantage of its increased production output. Gold prices might have exploded over a ten-year period, yet the recent six-month decline has put a huge strain on Golden Star. The expedited maturation of its mines is particularly troubling, since the accelerated extraction rates, which allowed for short-term profits, are now falling considerably. The impact of the company excessive overproduction on profits and growth is clear: decreasing gold reserves mean less production, and thus reduced revenue for the gold miner. When the decline in metal prices are taken into account, the outlook is even more grim.

In addition to overexpansion at the wrong time, Golden Star position has weakened due to its comparably less efficient operations. Unlike industry peers, such as IamGold Corp. (IAG) or Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI), the majority of the Toronto-based miner assets contain refractory ore, which is far more expensive to extract than non refractory ore. And, in an attempt to switch production to the lower cost gold ore, and thus increase margins, Golden Star has depleted its minesnon refractory ore. With low reserves and mounting cash costs, the firm inevitably turned to new acquisitions.

    Overpriced Acquisitions and Geopolitical Risk

    The purchase

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] some future and gave several reasons for my bearish stance towards the stock. A small market, high geopolitical risk in some of the countries the firm operates, along with overexpansion in times of fluctuating gold prices gave tune to the massive shedding of shares by investment gurus. Five months have past since I last considered Golden Star potential, and everything indicates the situation has not changed.

Guru Activity Shows a Clear Tendency

Steven Cohen (Trades, Portfolio), Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio) and Arnold Schneider (Trades, Portfolio), had already sold their entire holdings in the company by October 2013, indicating they had little faith in the gold miner recovery. By the end of the year, Jim Simons' (Trades, Portfolio) Renaissance Technologies took a similar decision, reducing its stake in the firm by 32%. This tendency towards the sale of Golden Star stock was duly noted by investors and analysts alike, and concurs with the company poor performance.

    A Look at the Numbers

In an industry plagued by fluctuating metal prices, operating with lofty margins can be quite helpful. Yet Golden Star cannot afford such luxuries. With an operating margin of 0.1% and a net margin of -56.8% the firm is in a tight spot, especially when compared to the industry average. Unlike its industry peersmedian, which are of 2.26% and -0.09%, respectively, the Toronto-based gold miner is struggling to generate decent cash flow levels. Further metrics depict a even worse situation for shareholders: return on equity is currently at -370% and revenue growth is estimated to reach a poor 2.5%. Purchasing overpriced assets, relative to current gold prices, is surely one of the reasons for such grim figures, as financial losses have taken their toll on Golden Star.

The announcement of its 2013 full year, and fourth quarter earnings only helped to add to shareholdersconcerns. A 15% decline in revenue was expected by those

10 Best Defensive Stocks To Own For 2014

As more investors flock to the FMCG sector as a defensive measure, FMCG stocks continue to reap huge investment returns. Blue-chip stocks like Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Nestle , Dabur , Colgate , Britannia and Glaxo SmithKline Consumer yielded over ten-fold jump in return for every rupee invested ( One rupee test ) during the period FY10-FY12. Clearly, the FMCG sector is being lapped up by the investor community.

Warren Buffet, the guru of value investing believed that the best way to test the investment potential of a stock is to determine the return earned by shareholders on every rupee invested. In other words, have these stocks generated at least one rupee for every rupee invested? This is measured by the increase in market cap relative to the increase in net worth.

The table below shows that FMCG companies have done very well with the "one rupee test", which is why investors are willing to wager on this defensive bet?

Therefore the situation is still very bullish for investors in physical gold and the gold ETFs (GLD, CEF, and PHYS). Investors interested in leveraging this situation into higher potential profits may also consider buying gold miners such as Randgold (GOLD), Goldcorp (GG), Yamana Gold (AUY), and any of the other gold miners. Finally, those willing to shoulder much larger risks may consider some of the exploration and micro-cap companies that offer significant profits at a high risk such as Chesapeake Gold (CHPGF.PK), Pretium Resources (PVG), Western Copper (WRN), or any other of the junior exploration companies. Though investors should keep in mind that gold mining companies and explorers do not always rise with a rising gold price - do your research before you invest in the miners.

Note that fair valuation is calculated using Graham Dodd Formula (GDF) deriving a fair value PE of 13.8 (slightly below, but close to our PE 15 standard). However, a normal PE of 16 has been historically applied by Mr. Market. Therefore, valuation falls between a PE of 13.8 to 16, or well within a range of normalcy.

Joe Granville, Whose Bearish Calls Moved Stocks, Dies at 90

Joseph Granville, a newsletter writer and technical analyst who moved stock markets with bearish calls in the 1970s and '80s, has died. He was 90.

Granville died in Saint Luke's Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri, said Laurel Gifford, a spokeswoman for Saint Luke's Health System. He died on Sept. 7, his wife, Karen Granville, said today. The cause of death isn't known, she said.

The publisher of the Granville Market Letter since 1963, Granville predicted the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU)'s slide in 1977 to 1978 and the end to the surge in computer-related shares in 2000. He was wrong in 1982 and 1995 when he called for losses before stocks rallied.

In his forecasts, Granville used criteria such as trading and price patterns rather than more commonly analyzed economic data and earnings growth. He started developing his own stock-market theories at what was then E.F. Hutton & Co., a New York-based brokerage, from 1957 to 1963.

By 1981, Granville was influential enough to spur a market slump. That January, he sparked a 2.4 percent one-day decline in the Dow average by advising his subscribers, "Sell Everything!"

His stock-pundit fame brought invitations to play in the Bob Hope Desert Classic golf tournament, perform with a chimpanzee at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, and play the piano at Carnegie Hall.

'Extremely Powerful'

"Joe was extremely powerful a generation ago," said Robert Stovall, a global strategist at Wood Asset Management Inc. in Sarasota, Florida, who worked with Granville at E.F. Hutton. "If he gave the thumbs down to a market, it was like the emperor in the coliseum. The market would go down."

In addition to writing about stocks, Granville produced books on subjects such as stamp investing and winning at bingo.

Joseph Ensign Granville was born on Aug. 20, 1923, in Yonkers, New York. His father, W. Irving Granville, "lost $30,000 of his own money and at least twice as much more that he borrowed from Grandma Buck and Auntie Blanche" in the stock-market crash of 1929, according to "The Book of Granville" (1984).

"The family survived only because our relatives were comfortable enough to write off their losses and aid us in recovering," Granville said. "It was my father's devastating experience with the stock market that made me so sensitive to the economic realities that lay behind every human pursuit."

Schoolboy Author

He attended the Todd School for Boys in Woodstock, Illinois, on a music scholarship, according to the Granville Market Letter's website.

A school tour to Mexico inspired Granville to write his first book, "A Schoolboy's Faith" (1941).

In 1948, he graduated from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he studied economics. His studies were interrupted in 1945, when he joined the U.S. Navy and was sent to the Marshall Islands.

While there, he wrote "Price Predictions," a book about pricing U.S. commemorative stamps aimed at speculators. "Everybody's Guide to Stamp Investment" followed in 1952.

Granville was hired by E.F. Hutton & Co. in 1957 to write its daily stock-market letter and worked there until 1963, when he started the Granville Market Letter, a newsletter with a subscription price of $250.

Granville's main stock indicator was called on-balance volume, or OBV, which he developed.

Stock Momentum

The idea "caught me, quite literally with my pants down," he wrote. "One August morning in 1961 I sat on the toilet in the men's room, away from the hubbub of the research department, musing about the stock market."

OBV gauges a stock's momentum. If a stock rises, the day's volume will be added to a cumulative OBV figure. If the share price falls, the total will be subtracted.

Granville also followed charts that tracked investor sentiment, the number of stocks reaching 52-week highs and lows, and the daily number of advancing and declining stocks. He compiled the measures into what he called his "Net Field Trend Indicator," used to predict the market's direction.

"Everyone is following the economy. I'm following the market," Granville said in an October 2006 interview. "I'm the exact opposite of Wall Street."

In "Granville's New Strategy of Daily Stock Market Timing for Maximum Profit" (1976), he said a bear market would occur in 1977-1978. The Dow slid 26 percent from the beginning of 1977 through February 1978 after a two-year rally.

Fame Soars

"His fame rapidly grew following hundreds of seminars starting in 1978," according to the Granville's website.

His influence waned after he missed the surge in stocks that began in August 1982.

Granville was bearish from 1982 until early 1986, according to the Hulbert Financial Digest, a monthly publication edited by Mark Hulbert that ranks market newsletters. Over that period, the Dow average had a 17 percent annualized return. He had turned bullish by the time the stock market crashed in October 1987.

Granville was also incorrect in predicting a stock-market slide in October 1995. He turned bullish in July 1996, after the Dow industrials had climbed about 20 percent.

Not all of Granville's best calls were in the distant past. On March 11, 2000, the day after the Nasdaq Composite Index (CCMP) jumped to a record 5048.62, Granville wrote that investors in technology stocks "will soon be burned." The index, heavy on computer-related companies, tumbled about 78 percent before bottoming on Oct. 9, 2002.

Learning Experience

"When I make a prediction or a statement, it's coming from somebody who's gone through 50 years of markets," Granville said. "It's not like one of these 28-year-old or 30-year-old or 31-year-old kids that come in and think they know all of the answers. They don't. They have to live through their mistakes. I had to live through my mistakes."

Granville's marriage to his first wife, Katherine, in 1945, was "a hysterical reaction to war," as he described it in "The Book of Granville." He had eight children with his second wife, the former Paulina "Polly" Delp, whom he married in 1950 and divorced in 1980. She died in 2012, at 84.

Granville was still making market predictions well into his 80s. He drew parallels between the Dow's climb above 12,000 for the first time in October 2006 to the 1929 stock-market crash and the bursting of the Internet bubble in 2000.

'Market Lessons'

"How quickly forgotten are the market lessons of yesteryear," he said. "Crossing Dow 12,000 will catch the Street buying at the top, as was done in early 2000. Hating technical analysis, the Street will be deaf to the technical message, which is currently screaming 'sell!'"

Granville wanted to be best known for "his major contributions to technical analysis and what he has taught to his followers all over the world," according to his website.

Granville's third marriage was to the former Karen Erickson. The children he had with Paulina included Leslie Joan Granville, Blanchard Irving Granville, Leona Granville Weissman, Mary Beth Granville, Johanna Cushing Granville and John Hallock Granville. Their son Paul Granville died in 1979, and daughter Sara Granville Smith died in 1982.

Advisors' Opinion:

christianz1969/Flickr Americans lately have been transferring their love of fast-casual restaurant food to stocks of companies in the segment. Late last month, "better burger" specialist The Habit Restaurants (HABT) launched an initial public offering that doubled in price within hours of hitting the market. Like a meal from one of The Habit's more traditional fast-food rivals, though, the feeling of satisfaction didn't last: The shares started to drop after the initial euphoria. But that isn't stopping other fast-casual operators from listing on the exchange. They're finding, though, what works in the kitchen isn't necessarily successful on the market. IPOh Yes IPOs of fast-casual chain operators are coming to the market faster than you can get a refill at a soda machine. This year alone has seen the market debut not only of The Habit, but also the Mediterranean-flavored Zoe's Kitchen (ZOES) and West Coast chicken griller El Pollo Loco Holdings (LOCO), among others. Like The Habit, the stocks of the latter two saw impressive first-day rises (although they didn't pop quite as high as those of the burger purveyor). Why the excitemen! t? Some of it can certainly be ascribed to the IPO market itself, which has had a frothy year. As of this writing, 262 companies have gone public, a 25 percent rise over the same period of 2013. In terms of total proceeds from IPOs, 2014 is set to be the best year for at least the past decade. Building a Better Burrito But likely a bigger factor is that the fast-casual segment has one great model that investors are hoping the newcomers can at least partially replicate -- Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). Since going public in 2006, the stock of the now-ubiquitous chain has gone through the roof. Its IPO was priced at $22 a share and doubled in its first day of trading. Since then, its shares have ballooned -- at the moment, they trade at nearly $660, for a hard-to-believe 2,900-plus-percent rise from the issue price. It's not t

But within the opportunity lies a conundrum: There is no other pure retail coffee competitor anywhere near the size of Starbucks to which it can be compared. The company competes with quick service restaurants like McDonald's  (NYSE: MCD  ) at breakfast, fast-casual restaurants such as Panera Bread (NASDAQ: PNRA  ) at lunch, and local coffee chains and independent coffee houses during other dayparts.

Oci NV is a Netherlands-based company, which divides its activities into two groups. The first group is engaged in the design, construction and maintenance of industrial and commercial infrastructures and buildings, such as roads, ports, railroads, hospitals, stadiums and water treatment units. The second group is engaged in the production of fertilizers, such as anhydrous ammonia, granulated urea, calcium ammonium nitrate and urea ammonium nitrate, among others. OCI attracted $2 billion in commitments from a group of investors including Cascade Investment LLC, Gatess personal investments vehicle, to help finance the move to Amsterdam, which it said would lower borrowing costs and boost its global profile. Yesterdays settlement prompted Cairo-based investment bank Pharos Holding to raise Orascom to buy from hold, saying the construction and fertilizer company would proceed with an offer to investors to buy its Cairo-listed shares or swap them with OCI NV (OCI) stock.

Top Cheapest Stocks To Buy For 2015

Top Cheapest Stocks To Buy For 2015: Cheniere Energy Inc.(LNG)

Cheniere Energy, Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the ownership and operation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminals and natural gas pipelines in the Gulf Coast of the United States. The company develops LNG receiving terminal projects on Sabine Pass LNG in western Cameron Parish, Louisiana on the Sabine Pass Channel; Corpus Christi LNG near Corpus Christi, Texas; and Creole Trail LNG at the mouth of the Calcasieu Channel in central Cameron Parish, Louisiana. It also involves in the oil and natural gas exploration and development activities; and LNG and natural gas marketing business. The company was founded in 1983 and is based in Houston, Texas.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Doug Ehrman]

    World supply
One of the major concerns that has been explored by natural gas stocks' shareholders, industry insiders, and politicians alike is the demand for exportation of LNG. There is a significant supply disparity that has led to a price discrepancy of nearly five-to-one for European versus U.S. natural gas. As such, the demand to export a portion of supply is quite high, particularly among companies. U.S. law on this subject is very strict and to date, only Cheniere (NYSEMKT: LNG  ) has been given permission to export small quantities. This license may be a central reason why among the natural gas stocks discussed, Cheniere is up over 200% in the last two years.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

There are at least three areas of opportunity for MLP investors resulting from this surge in US gas production. The first, and safest avenue of profit is in partnerships that are building out natural gas infrastructure to connect major gas-producing areas like the Marcellus Shale to major population centers, or to terminals that are being built to export liquefied natural gas (LNG). The list of partnerships involved in transporting natural gas is long, but includes such name! s asEnergy Transfer Equity(NYSE: ETE),Enterprise Products Partners(NYSE: EPD),Kinder Morgan Energy Partners(NYSE: KMP), andBoardwalk Pipeline Partners(NYSE: BWP). These partnerships tend to yield in the 3-6% range, and for the most part have relatively stable distributions (BWP being a notable recent exception with a drastic distribution cut earlier this year.)

  • [By Jim Jubak, Senior Markets Editor, MoneyShow.com]

Yesterday, September 12, shares of Cheniere Energy (LNG) hit a new 52-week high of $33.76. As of the close, they'd dropped back slightly to $33.10. That still puts the stock up 18.5% from its August 30 close.

Best Income Stocks For 2014

Last week, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke acknowledged that as economic conditions improved, he'd start tapering his bond-buying stimulus program. Markets tumbled on the news, but it was a wonderful gift from the Fed Chairman to patient investors looking to pick up companies at reasonable prices.

For the real-money Inflation-Protected Income Growth portfolio, it meant that the long-standing limit order to buy energy pipeline giant Kinder Morgan (NYSE: KMI  ) below $36 finally triggered on Friday. That purchase means that the original $30,000 invested in the iPIG portfolio has now been completely allocated to stocks. With all that cash allocated, the next test is whether the companies in the portfolio will continue their strings of paying and raising their dividends.

Speaking of dividends
Of the previously existing holdings in the portfolio, two paid their dividends last week: fast-food giant McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) and electricity generator NV Energy (NYSE: NVE  ) . McDonald's $0.77 per share added $12.32 to the iPIG portfolio's coffers and was the company's third consecutive quarterly dividend at that rate. NV Energy's $0.19 per share handed $15.96 to the iPIG portfolio and was the second quarterly payout at that level.

    One medical-device maker to avoid
While it's certainly far from a disaster case, I believe income seekers looking at orthopedic reconstructive-device maker Zimmer Holdings (NYSE: ZMH  ) would be better served looking elsewhere. From a cash perspective, Medtronic and ResMed both carry net cash positions, while Smith & Nephew and Zimmer both lug around net debt positions. Zimmer's net debt of $450 million, though, is more than double that of Smith & Nephew and acts as an added drag when it comes to raising its dividend or making earnings-accretive acquisitions.

For the calendar year-to-date, the Fund Investor Class returned +2.9% compared to +8.3% for the S&P 500 and +7.0% for the Russell 3000. DIRECTV (DTV) (+25% on AT&T buyout offer), Martin Marietta Materials (MLM) (+30% on its acquisition of Texas Industries) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) (+12%, and in the news for its hostile takeover battle for Allergan) benefited from the robust deal environment in different ways. Interval Leisure (IILG) (-37%) was the largest detractor and one of our few companies where business value declined. Our earnings estimates fell roughly 15% when Interval announced that four large, multi-year corporate relationships renewed at less favorable rates in their timeshare exchange business. We think the stock has overreacted to this news, and the company continues to add strategically to its platform. Other small-cap stocks that detracted from year-to-date results included XO Group (XOXO) (-25%) and Redwood Trust (RWT) (-11%). Broader themes behind the relative shortfall include our overweight position in consumer discretionary companies (the weakest sector in the market year-to-date), our lack of near-term big winners in health care and technology (the strongest sectors in the market year-to-date) and our conservative portfolio positioning in the first half of the year. We are not pleased with recent results. It is natural for our concentrated investing style to be out of step with the market at times.
