Top 10 Construction Stocks To Watch For 2014

Tiffany Trawick gets it. We're not living in "Leave it to Beaver" times anymore, where apron-clad mom sits at home, baking brownies and stenciling hearts on construction paper to send to letterman Wally who is away at university.

Trawick, for one, juggles a full-time job as an adviser to Delaware State University's Residence Hall Association with full-time psychology coursework. When her 9-year-old goes away to school, she won't be waiting in line at the post office.

"It would be nice to get a pretty package from mom," she says, "but sometimes mom doesn't have the time."

Care package companies are counting on it. In recent years, there has been a rise in commercial gift package options geared toward college students. They range from a bedroom in a bag, including a comforter, laundry hamper, sheets and towels, to a mobile medicine chest full of cough syrup, allergy pills and contraceptives.

The Global Technologies division operates in the product areas of access control systems, secure card issuance, identification technology and hotel locks. The Entrance Systems division is a supplier of entrance automation products and services. The Company subsidiaries include ASSA Sverige AB, Timelox AB and ABLOY Holdings Ltd., among others. In November 2013, it acquired Ameristar Fence Products Inc, a manufacturer of ornamental fences and gates. In January 2014, it acquired IdenTrust. In February 2014, it acquired Lumidigm. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Weighing Machine]

Domiciled in Sweden, Assa Abloy (ASAZY.PK) is the largest lock maker in the world with a global market share of nearly 12%. While the construction market has been difficult since the financial crisis, Assa has continued to increase revenue and operating profit every year since 2010 and is on track to do so again in 2013. While commercial construction has been subdued, the aftermarket (which represents ~70% of the total lock market) is driven by changes in tenancy, renovation, and extensions have not been very cyclical and provides the company with a steady stream of profits. Assa has been cobbled together through 150+ acquisitions since the early 1990s and while management has done a good job of rationalizing facilities, there remain opportunities to increase manufacturing efficiencies. Similarly, the company's back office is still running dozens of IT systems (as a result of acquisitions) but management plans to consolidate these over the next few years. Further, Assa remains an active consolidator of the locks industry - it should be able to add 5% per year to sales via acquisitions (as an aside, those interested in micro-caps should have a look at Securidev in France which trades at less than half the private market value Assa has paid for lock makers on average over the past decade). Having the highest margins in the industry, Assa is able to achieve significant synergies on acquired businesses and earn good returns on capital for its shareholders through M&A. Thus even in a difficult economy, we expect Assa will continue to grow its operating profit given its steady after market revenue, opportunity to improve results through cost cutting, and through value accretive M&A. While its shares are not cheap, at 19x earnings, shares could offer investors with a five year holding period and an 8-10% annualized return.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Tile Shop Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTS)managed to recover almost 12% on Friday to $14.50, but this one tanked on accusations of having third party transactions that would have inflated the company sales. Shares were down almost 40% on Thursday to $12.95 after having closed at $21.22 the day before. Now there are investigations and everyone is scared despite the company denying the claims and despite the company reaffirming its guidance. This one even traded 19 million shares on Thursday and 20 million on Friday, versus an average of what would be closer to 500,000 or so before the news. Anything tied to “accounting irregularities” sends investors running and brings the regulators and lawyers in.

One home improvement stores player that insiders are active in here is Tile Shop (TTS), which operates as a specialty retailer of manufactured and natural stone tiles, setting and maintenance materials, and related accessories in the U.S. Insiders are buying this stock into major weakness, since shares are off by 38% so far in 2014.

Tile Shop has a market cap of $573 million and an enterprise value of $652 million. This stock trades at a premium valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 45 and a forward price-to-earnings of 26. Its estimated growth rate for this year is -20.5%, and for next year it's pegged at 35.5%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $3.53 million and its total debt is $96.15 million.

A director just bought 70,000 shares, or about $683,000 worth of stock, at $9.77 per share.

From a technical perspective, TTS is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock has been uptrending over the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $9.06 to its recent high of $11.58 a share. During that uptrend, shares of TTS have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of TTS within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you're bullish on TTS, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some near-term support at $10.50 and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance at $11.58 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 688,592 shares. If that breakout materializes soon, then TTS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $12 to its 50-day moving average of $12.99. Any high-volume move above $12.99 will then gi

Earlier this month, peer Vulcan Materials (NYSE: VMC  ) reported 5% lower shipments of aggregates, although rising prices helped offset the impact, and the company noted double-digit-percentage increases in shipments to hot housing areas including Arizona, California, and Florida. Similarly, Cemex (NYSE: CX  ) posted a substantial loss for its March quarter on with 5% lower revenue, but the Mexican company pointed to strength in the U.S. and Asian markets as offsetting weakness in Mexico, Europe, and Latin America.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Despite economic and political turmoil, equity markets performed well across the board in September of 2013 and over the trailing twelve months. The September gains reversed losses in August and also resulted in positive overall quarterly performance with a number of major indexes moving further into record territory. After disturbing the markets in May and June with comments that they may taper Quantitative Easing (QE), the Fed surprised investors with an announcement that it would not reduce its asset purchases in the near-term. The announcement removed fears that a continued rise in interest rates may stall the economic recovery, as seen by the market's negative reaction to the sharp rise in the 10-year Treasury rate in August of 2013. Investors were also comforted by improving fundamentals both domestically and abroad. The Eurozone may finally be emerging from its prolonged recession and a number of economic reports in the U.S. continue to show progress. Specifically, initial unemployment claims dropped to a multiyear low early in September and the housing market continued to improve, as evidenced by prices rising 12.4 percent year-over year, which along with the stock market's strength, has created a positive wealth effect for consumers. In response to this general economic improvement, consumer confidence increased at the end of September, and the index of leading economic indicators ticked up as well, suggesting that, absent the effects of politics, the recovery in the real economy was continuing. Our portfolios that focus on corporate restructuring (Keeley Small Cap Value, Keeley Small-Mid Cap Value, Keeley Mid Cap Value, Keeley All Cap Value, and Keeley Alternative Value) have all experienced a productive investment cycle with respect to their opportunity sets, and many of our holdings have posted impressive results in recent quarters. Are you a gambling man (or gambling woman, as the case may be)? Then now may be the right time to place a bet on North American Palladium Ltd (NYSEMKT:PAL) ... the micro cap precious metals miner that has watched its stock fall from just under $2.00 in early February to a low of 44 cents yesterday. That's a 78% drubbing, for those of you who are counting, with a big chunk of that loss coming yesterday when PAL shares lost 28% of their value on the heels of two... shall we say "less than flattering" articles about the company were posted? Yet, sometimes the very best trades are ideas that never looked good on paper.

Fast-food chains are making a formidable attempt at adapting to shifting consumer tastes. For decades, a solid cheeseburger at a low price had been enough to drive the rapid expansion of the businesses throughout the United States and overseas, but now it appears that fast eaters want more. With new products such as a Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger, and health-oriented flatbread sandwiches, The Wendy's Company (NASDAQ: WEN  ) is proving to be a formidable competitor to the long-reigning number one chain, McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) . The stock is feeling full as well, up more than 35%in 12 months. The question now is, can the stock still move higher as management continues its renovation, or has this opportunity passed?

Refreshed
New menu items aren't the only signs of change at Wendy's, and certainly not the only elements that analysts predict will show big results come the company's earnings release next week.

Wendy's has taken substantial efforts to boost its comparable, and ultimately, bottom-line sales. The companyhas cut unprofitable operations, such as breakfast service for certain franchises, while saving in areas like beverages -- where management recently negotiated more favorable contracts with two suppliers. Similar to McDonald's recent efforts to boost store sales (which include late night breakfasts, healthier choices), Wendy's has emphasized its value menu, while simultaneously pushing high-priced premium items, like the above-mentioned Pretzel Bacon Burger. Backat headquarters, the company refinanced its debt at more favorable rates, resulting in increased full-year guidance.

Shares of PepsiCo (PEP) were in the black Thursday, as the beverage giant logged higher-than-anticipated first-quarter profit and sales.

Pepsi said it earned $1.22 billion, or 79 cents a share, one dime higher than the year-ago period. Adjusted earnings were 83 cents a share, ahead of the 75 cents the Street was expecting. Revenue edged upward to $12.62 billion, coming in just ahead of the $12.4 billion consensus.

While beverage volume was flat, snack products saw a 2% gain.

In North America, Pepsi food business saw sales rise 1.3%, and beverages revenue inched upward, helped by sales of noncarbonated offerings, as carbonated drinks saw a 1% decline in volume in the region.

Outside the U.S., European sales rose 1%, while revenue fell 4.6% in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Morningstar R. J. Hottovy maintained a Hold rating and $88 price target on the stock, but was largely upbeat about the quarter, writing that it highlighted the firm strong portfolio of snack products and pricing power in the beverage market.

Frito-Lay North America enjoyed 4% organic revenue growth, led by mid-single-digit gains in U.S. salty snacks and price increases across the portfolio. Similarly, Pepsi Americas Beveragespositive price actions and growth in non-carbonated drinks helped to offset further volume declines in North American soda and difficult performance in Mexico. For PepsiCo in sum, price increases added three percentage points of growth in the quarter. In our opinion, this disciplined price performance highlights the company solid brand intangible assets, and we continue to believe that management long-run mid-single-digit revenue growth target is appropriate.

Of course, we do not thinkCoca-Cola needs to capitalize the business with $5 billion in cash, as Procter & Gamble did for Duracell to “plug the gap” between the valuation of the business and Berkshire’s stake, but that may be a possibility in this instance as well. Howeverall us crazye think Berkshire could also take a look at CCEAG, Coca-Cola’s German bottling business. We valued this at $2.75 billion three years ago6, based on $3.8b of revenue, a 10.4% EBITDA margin and a 7.0x multiple. We think there is upward bias to a current valuation given likely cost rationalization that has occurred in the intervening years. If we wanted to get even more creative, we could even envision Berkshire taking a look more broadly at European bottlers like Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) and Coca-Cola HBC (CCH), which have similar industry dynamics to the U.S. bottlers. We note that some type of swap transaction, la Duracell, could save Berkshire Hathaway nearly $5 billion in income taxes.

9 Reasons Why You'll Benefit to Join a Gym Right Now

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Own For 2015

CrossFit personal trainer doing push ups on kettle bells with small group of people in Gym. Vetta/Getty Images As much as we'd like to believe that chocolate cake and ice cream are the elixir for a long and healthy life, we know that's not the case. We also know that a regular exercise routine is one of the surest paths to a longer and healthier life. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderately intense aerobic exercise every week -- but less than half of all Americans do so. And for the millions of people who would like to do better, this is often the time of year to consider joining a gym. We can all find lots of excuses for not getting our bodies in motion, but there's an equally compelling list of reasons why we should do so. Whether you want to lose weight, gain muscle, tone up or improve your overall health, new year's resolutions are the No. 1 reason people of all fitness levels pony up the bucks and decide to join a conveniently located gym. Here are nine reasons why a gym membership is a really good idea, starting with the most obvious one. (An upcoming post will provide you with reasons why you should skip the gym and find another way to exercise.) 1. Get Healthy A gym encourages you to do a balanced program that includes both aerobic and strength training exercises. These promote heart health and weight loss, help prevent osteoporosis and improve muscle strength, balance and flexibility. If weight loss is a primary goal, consider the mantra of a friend who tells me "nothing tastes as good as getting in shape feels." 2. Find Support and Motivation Some people really enjoy exercise; for others, it's a chore. If you fall into that latter group, being surrounded by other people who are in the same boat can provide the incentive you need to make exercise part of your regular routine. Your initial intention might be to drag yourself to the gym twice a week, but once you find your rhythm, you may end up going on a more regular basis, which will help make your goals more attainable. 3. Get Stress Relief According to the Mayo Clinic, virtually any form of exercise can act as a stress reliever -- whether you're a serious athlete or an out of shape wannabe. Physical activity boosts the brain's production of endorphins, which simply makes us feel better physically and have a brighter emotional outlook. Exercise reduces tensions in both the body and the mind, which can improve your mood and the quality of your sleep. For many people, the gym becomes a bit of sanctuary where you can turn off the phone and forget all of the troubles at work or in your personal life. 4. Learn From the Pros Many gyms now have professional trainers on staff -- often people with college degrees in sports science or other related fields, along with personal training certificates. They are trained to design exercise programs that fit your individual needs in a fun and safe way, showing you proper exercise techniques so that you don't hurt yourself and that you get the most out of each exercise routine. 5. Sample the Variety One of the big advantages a gym has over your guest room/home gym is the wide array of weights, machines, exercise classes and other elements. This gives you the opportunity to try new exercise equipment and vary your routine. If you do the same workout day-in and day-out, your body builds a type of muscle memory and the gains you make are incrementally decreased. Fitness experts say that finding different ways to exercise the same muscles and muscle groups can improve the quality of your workout. 6. Learn From Each Other Inevitably you'll see the people around you doing exercises that are new to you and may look sort of fun. You can certainly borrow and learn from others, but with this caveat: make sure you learn the proper technique so that you don't injure yourself. Just because someone else is doing something that looks interesting, doesn't mean that they know what they're doing. On the other hand, most people are happy to share the knowledge they've acquired. Ask them what that exercise is meant to accomplish and about the proper form to do it right. 7. Sweat Together Many people find exercise classes to be the most efficient and fun way to get a full body workout. You can do everything from Aqua Arthritis (where there's a pool) to Zumba, and from kickboxing to yoga. There's usually a very energetic leader to help provide you with some extra energy and motivation. Many people do have to get over the hump initially of being the class newbie, where it seems like you're the only one who doesn't know the right steps or positions, or the only man in a class of a dozen women. (Granted, that's not necessarily a problem for all men) Don't worry though. They are concentrating on their own form and not watching yours. 8. Check out the Holiday Deals This is often the best time of year to join a gym because many of them are offering steep price discounts and incentives to join now. According to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, a record 52.9-million Americans belonged to a health club last year, up more than 5 percent from the previous year. Most gyms offer a trial day or week to test out the gym. Take advantage of that to check out the atmosphere and the crowds. Most gyms also offer you a 30-day period during which you can change your mind and get out of the contract, but make sure you get that in writing. If you don't join just before or after the new year, June and July are often the best months to find good deals. 9. Get Going If you're serious about losing weight and getting in better shape, there's no better time to start than right now. The longer you put it off, the more excuses you'll come up with. And if one of your goals is to rock the swim suit next summer, you're going to need three to six months to see the gains. It doesn't happen overnight. If you do decide to take the plunge and join a gym, you may want to consult with your doctor, just to make sure that certain exercise programs are not going to do more harm than good. And don't try to keep up on the first day with the very buff looking person working out nearby. Go slow at the start to avoid injuries, which can discourage you from returning to the gym next week. 3 Biotech Stocks I Don't Want for Christmas

With 2014 drawing to a close, biotech investors are probably wondering which stocks to stuff in their stockings for next year. While there are plenty of promising biotech stocks to choose from, we should also take note of three high-risk, low-growth biotech stocks that investors might consider avoiding: Inovio Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INO  ) , VIVUS (NASDAQ: VVUS  ) , and Zogenix (NASDAQ: ZGNX  ) .

Inovio Pharmaceuticals
At first glance, Inovio Pharmaceuticals' business looks impressive. It delivers synthetic DNA vaccines (which don't replicate or spread in host cells) through electric pulses to boost cellular intake. According to Inovio, that technology could be used in the development of preventive and therapeutic vaccines for cancer, influenza, HIV, hepatitis C, and malaria. But Inovio, which has no marketed products, has made that same promise for three decades.

In September 2013, Roche (NASDAQOTH: RHHBY  ) made an up-front payment of $10 million to Inovio, along with agreeing to milestone payments up to $412.5 million, for exclusive licenses on two vaccines -- INO-5150 for prostate cancer and INO-1800 for hepatitis B. The deal also entitled Inovio to double-digit tiered royalties on future sales of the products. But Roche ended the licensing agreement for INO-5150 in November, eliminating a large portion of those potential milestone and royalty payments. Roche will stick with INO-1800 and launch a phase 1/2a study in early 2015, but it could also walk away there if the results disappoint.

Looking ahead, Inovio does not have many catalysts on the horizon. VGX-3100, the company's most advanced vaccine, won't start phase 3 trial enrollment until 2016. Although Inovio said it had enough cash to meet its capital requirements through 2017, that forecast excludes funding for the VGX-3100 trial, which means a share-diluting secondary offering might be in the cards.

VIVUS
Another stock to avoid is obesity drug maker VIVUS, which plunged 66% in 2014. In 2012, VIVUS' Qsymia and Arena's (NASDAQ: ARNA  ) Belviq were the first obesity drugs approved by the FDA in 13 years, after Wyeth's popular combination drug fen-phen was pulled from the market in 1997 due to cardiac risks.

Peak sales estimates for Qysmia originally topped $1 billion, yet the drug generated just $23.7 million in revenue in 2013. In the first nine months of 2014, Qsymia only posted sales of $32.6 million. On the bright side, Qsymia sales only accounted for 35% of VIVUS' top line during that period. Forty-two percent came from licensing and commercialization agreements for the erectile dysfunction drug Stendra, which is marketed by Auxilium Pharmaceuticals.

Stendra, though, is not a dependable long-term source of revenue for VIVUS. Rodman & Renshaw analyst Michael King believes U.S. sales of Stendra will likely peak at $483 million in 2016 when generic erectile dysfunction drugs reach the market, which translates to a maximum of $100 million for VIVUS. Looking ahead, analysts only expect VIVUS to post 1.3% year-over-year revenue growth in fiscal 2015 as its bottom line remains deep in the red.

Zogenix
The maker of the painkiller Zohydro ER lost about two-thirds of its market value in 2014 due a storm of controversy regarding the drug's approval.

Many state governments requested that the FDA reconsider its approval of Zohydro, an extended-release version of the potent painkiller hydrocodone, citing its potential for abuse. Zohydro isn't tamper-resistant, meaning it can be crushed or dissolved for recreational drug use. A similar opioid painkiller, oxycodone, was abused in the same manner in the past and implicated in thousands of deaths. Zohydro is estimated to be five to 10 times as potent as Vicodin, which contains a smaller dose of hydrocodone mixed with acetaminophen.

Zogenix initially expected Zohydro to generate peak annual sales of $300 million, on the assumption that it would be sold to 1% of all hydrocodone users. That would have been a big boost for Zogenix, which only generated $33 million in revenue in 2013 (mostly from sales of Sumavel DosePro, a migraine drug it sold to Endo International this year). The problem is that Purdue Pharma, Teva, and Pfizer all have tamper-resistant painkillers on the way. Market approval for any of these drugs could render Zohydro obsolete.

Zogenix isn't a complete lost cause yet -- a tamper-resistant version of Zohydro could be approved by the FDA in the first quarter of 2015 and replace Zohydro ER. But even if approved, the drug would face intense competitive pressure from larger rivals with deeper pockets.

Best Heal Care Stocks For 2014

So far so good on our expectation of a 4 to 5% pullback and then a resumption of the bull market.

The pullback amounted to:

Dow: -4.9% S&P 500: -5.0% Nasdaq: -5.1% NYSE Composite: -5.9%

One day of rally and bounce in the price of oil does not mean the pullback is necessarily over, but is encouraging, as is the strength of global markets overnight, and the positive early morning indicators this morning.

The pullback did take care of the situations that had us concerned and expecting it. The first was the short-term overbought condition above 50-day moving averages (and sell signals on our short-term technical indicators).
