C = Catalyst for the Stock Movement

Corning has been making new 52-week highs as of late, but is this trend sustainable? In this stock market environment, anything is possible. However, that doesn mean all moves are justifiable.

Corning Incorporated produces and sells specialty glasses, ceramics, and related materials worldwide. It operates through five segments: Display Technologies, Telecommunications, Environmental Technologies, Specialty Materials, and Life Sciences.

Corning has a diverse revenue base. There is currently high demand for tablets and smartphones, Gorilla Glass has received many positive reviews, Q1 estimates were recently beat, there have been cost and efficiency improvements, revenue has increased for three consecutive years, and the stock is at a good valuation, trading at 14 times earnings, while the industry trades at 19 times earnings. However, when you look at the breakdown for the last quarter, there is good reason for caution. The only segment that showed improvement was Life Sciences. Corning is confident in future growth, but that doesn mean confidence will lead to actual results.

Shares of Tetra Technologies traded down as much as 16% this morning after the oil & gas services company reported a profit of 6 cents not including Maritech and other unusual items, missing analyst forecasts for 19 cents. Tetra Technologies also said it would make between 50 cents and 60 cents during fiscal 2014, below forecasts for 66 cents.

At 2:38 p.m., however, Tetra was trading down just 0.8% at $10.88. RBC’s Kurt Hallead and team explain why:

Tetra Technologies rallied after starting the day at -15%. We think there was an overreaction to the headline miss andTetra Technologies’ core operating business results, along with 2H14 guidance, were in line with expectations. Moving forward, the company has some key catalysts on the horizon that should lead to significantly improved operating performance and investor awareness. Key Catalysts:

    1. Get Maritech (E&P P&A liability in GoM) off the books. Ideally by 3Q. Once this is done,Tetra Technologies may implement a dividend or share repo program.

    2. Broaden Production Testing customer base, which should lead to a ramp in margins.

    3. Increase scale of Compressco through M&A, along with awareness of the MLP’s value to Tetra Technologies.

    4. Sell the offshore services business to simplify business structure.

Shares of Tetra Technologies are down 12% in 2014.

Investors are hungering for Nurtisystem’s (NTRI) stock. How else to explain Nutrisystems’s huge jump today, following its earnings beat?

    Reuters

    The Wall Street Journal explains:

For the third quarter, Nutrisystem reported a profit of $356,000, or a penny a share, down from $2.6 million, or nine cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time charges and other items, adjusted profit grew to 15 cents a share from 10 cents…

Looking ahead, Nutrisystem sees fourth quarter per-share results ranging between a two cent profit to a two cent loss, compared to the penny loss forecast by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. The company also expects revenue will rise in the mid-single digits.

Analysts are far less enthusiastic than investors, however, largely because of valuation. Imperial Capital’s Mitchell Pinheiro explains:

We are raising our one-year price target on NTRI shares to $18, about 20% above the recent share price and maintaining our In-Line rating. NTRI is in the early stages of recovering from five years of declining revenue and we are encouraged by the 3Q13 results that reflect management initial back-to-basics strategies in the core direct marketing business. An attractive slate of growth initiatives for 2014 appears promising and we believe these should provide real newness to a product and brand that went stale with consumers. Expansion in retailers such as Walmart (WMT) and the potential for additional retail distribution in 2014 provide potential upside to revenue. At recent prices, we believe the stock reflects the improved outlook sufficiently and we remain appropriately cautious on the outlook for consumer discretionary spending in the January diet season along with the expectation that commercial diet competitors will become more aggressive.

Business development companies like Hercules Technology Growth Capital (HTGC) invest money into middle-market companies that are experiencing fast growth. Often, these investments take the form of mezzanine debt paying interest in the teens, and some warrants. Hercules likes to focus more on senior secured revolvers and term loans to refinance existing debt, and will even take second-liens. It has more attractive upside with its investments than other BDCs because it focuses on tech, energy tech, healthcare, life sciences and business services — all of which can fetch higher multiples upon exit. It pays out a sturdy 7.3% dividend.

So why did MRLN stock get cut nearly in half earlier in the year even though other small-cap stocks didn’t? Good question — the answer still isn’t clear. That may be why shares have finally perked up the last couple of weeks. Top 10 Promising Companies To Watch For 2014

Just as living benefits helped drive broker-dealers' variable annuity feeding frenzy years ago, these guaranteed features appear to be propelling firms' sales of indexed annuities.

Broker-dealers and wirehouses have taken a particular shine to indexed annuities, seeing them as a fixed-income alternative that can provide better growth than a CD. They're an attractive product, considering that low interest rates have made many other fixed-income alternatives less promising.

A quick lesson on these products: Indexed annuities credit clients' accounts with a minimum guaranteed rate of interest. They also credit an interest rate that's tied to movement within an index. Accountholders don't capture the full amount of the index's performance, as carriers place limits on clients' participation in the index and can cap the return.

Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BKRKY) (Persero) Tbk PT, a leading commercial bank and microfinance lender in Indonesia, declined in the third quarter. Recent stock performance was largely attributable to a significant drop in the Indonesian Rupiah. While we believe the company's fundamentals and competitive position remain sound, the country suffered a larger than expected deterioration in its current account deficit, leading to a weaker currency and higher interest rates, which negatively impacted its local equity market. 2. Revenue growth can beat expectations
Apple's revenue climbed 11% to $43.6 million. This kind of growth would've been embarrassing in previous years, but Wall Street was bracing for a top-line uptick of less than 9%. It's easy to see why the market wasn't hopeful. Related companies that reported in recent days had some unsettling news.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) revealed that just half of the 4 million iPhones it sold during the first three months of this year were iPhone 5s. The balance were cheaper iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models that naturally reduce Apple's average selling price. Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS  ) took a hit after posting uninspiring financials, warning of a net inventory reserve. Cirrus Logic provides audio chips for Apple products, so weakness at Cirrus Logic was parlayed into concerns for Apple. Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) also tumbled after posting weak sales of wireless products. Yes, Nokia can be rightfully identified as the competition, but the fear was that folks just weren't buying any smartphones. That didn't apply to Apple and the 37.4 million iPhones it did sell.

    3. Apple can raise its dividend
Finally! For the first time since initiating a payout policy last March, Apple is boosting its payouts. The new rate of $3.05 a share is a 15% improvement, pushing the stock's yield up to 3% based on Tuesday night's close.

  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

Apple shares also plummeted 5.5%, dipping below $400 for the first time in more than a year. Investors are worried that the iPhone maker will miss estimates when it reports earnings next week as a number of weak signs have emerged. Shares of Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS  ) , a key supplier of audio components for Apple products, finished down 15.7% after it lowered revenue expectations for the quarter and a lower-than-expected inventory, presumably on reduced demand from Apple. Analysts have also said they expect iPhone sales to be down from the December quarter and that the iPad mini could cut into gross margins.

  • [By Jake L'Ecuyer]

Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS) was also up, gaining 4.44 percent to $21.55 after the company beat on the bottom line and caught an upgrade from Northland Securities to an Outperform rating and $27 price target.

His five-year cumulative is 176.4%, compared to 12.2% for the S&P 500. Most recently, he made headlines for making a large contrarian bet on Research In Motion (RIMM) and joining its board in his first activist investing foray. In the fourth quarter, he added to this position. He also added to his positions in Citigroup Inc. (C), Old Republic Corp. As a Ben Graham devotee, Watsa looks past short-term fluctuations in price to the underlying strength of a business. His stance on the economy, as of September and October 2011, was that he believed the U.S. was showing Depression-level interest rates and deficits, but he still liked some stocks and would hedge his exposure, he told CFA Institute Magazine.

Top 5 Energy Stocks For 2014

On this day in economic and business history...

The flow of moving water has been one of humanity's oldest sources of energy. However, water wheels at shoreline mills are hardly sufficient for a modern electrified civilization. And so, less than a year after Thomas Edison first developed a working electric light bulb, the first modern hydroelectric turbine began operating at the Wolverine Chair Factory in Grand Rapids, Mich., on July 24, 1880.

The turbine, operated by the Grand Rapids Electric Light and Power Company, generated enough power to light up 16 arc lamps. It lit up several riverside businesses as well as the chair factory, and the Grand Rapids Eagle observed: "The light was a grand success, strong, steady, white and uniform. It called thousands of people on to the streets and into places lighted by it, and it was admired and enjoyed by all."

Two years later, the first purpose-built hydroelectric plant went into service on the Fox River in Wisconsin. By the end of the 1880s, more than 200 electric plants generated at least some of their power from the movement of water. Hydropower use continued to grow, and by 1907 15% of all American electricity was generated from the water. By 1940, after a massive boost from President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal construction programs, hydropower accounted for a full 40% of all electricity generated in the United States.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Offshore drillers are navigating choppy seas today–and its not just Seadrill (SDRL) that has problems, as analysts reiterated sell ratings on Transocean (RIG) and Noble (NE) today.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Yes, it’s true. With offshore drillers like Noble (NE) Rowan (RDC) and Ensco (ESV) all down more than 20% this year, Societe General now have “neutral” stance on the group. The bank cut its ratings on Noble, Ensco and Rowan, as well.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Societe Generale’s Edward Muztafago explains why now:

Conditions in the offshore drilling market are continuing to worsen. Dayrates for high margin deepwater rigs are falling significantly, and in many cases are coming in materially below our expectations. The situation will likely be exacerbated with little improvement in exploration demand and a significant influx of uncontracted newbuild arrivals (15 of 34) over the next 12 months. There is also risk the shallow water jack-up market could follow suit, with 50 of 60 planned newbuilds still needing to secure commitments over the next 12 months. We see limited prospects for a near-term rebound in offshore drilling stocks as a result of the worsening conditions, and believe offshore drilling could remain the most out of favour oil services subsector for several more quarters. We lower our dayrate assumptions, as well as offshore driller eps, multiples and price targets.

Offshore drilling stocks have already declined 15%-20% since late June. This decline has likely priced in much of the risk from a further deterioration in fundamentals, in our opinion. We adopt a neutral rather than bearish subsector stance.

Muztafago cut Noble to Hold from Buy, and slashed its target price to $27 from $35. He cut Ensco to Sell from Hold, with the price target dropping to $44 from $52. Rowan gets its rating slashed to Hold from Buy and its price target gets cut to $31 from $39.

Shares of Ensco have dropped 1% to $45.51 at 3:25 p.m., while Rowan has fallen 2.4% to $27.17 and Noble is off 2.8% at $24.73.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Offshore drillers like Transocean (RIG), Seadrill (SDRL) and Noble (NE) have gotten pounded this year. Is it time to buy? Well, if not that, at least its time to become less bearish, say the folks at BMO Capital Markets, who upgraded the shares of Transocean, Seadrill, Diamond Offshore (DO), Ensco (ESV), Noble, Rowan (RDC) and Atwood Oceanics (ATW).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Rapier]

The second, and riskier, option is to buy MLPs engaged in natural gas production. While these tend to have some portion of their output hedged against sharp price fluctuations, they retain much more exposure to the ups and downs of natural gas prices than the midstream partnerships, which function as toll collectors.EV Energy Partners(NASDAQ: EVEP),Atlas Resource Partners(NYSE: ARP),BreitBurn Energy Partners(NASDAQ: BBEP) andMemorial Production Partners(NASDAQ: MEMP) are some of the upstream (oil and gas production) partnerships in the US shale plays.

  • [By Joseph Hogue]

Atlas Resource Partners (NYSE: ARP  ) offers the lowest cost to DCF and the second-highest yield of the group. The company is active in the Barnett Shale, Appalachian Basin, the Raton Basin, the Black Warrior Basin and the Mississippi Lime with an interest in over 12,000 producing natural gas and oil wells. The partnership's coverage ratio just missed a top rank as well, and the units could be a solid addition. May saw insider purchases by four officers for 52,530 units at an average price of $19.73 per unit with no insider selling in the past twelve months.

The management team at oil and gas companyAtlas Energy (NYSE: ATLS  ) has really taken Warren Buffett's advice to heart. Buffett's old adage to "be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful" seems to be that team's approach. After selling its shale assets to Chevron at the top of the market, the company has been diligently acquiring natural gas assets at the market's low. That blueprint continues to be followed as evidenced by the recently announced acquisition of substantial natural gas assets via its master limited partnership, Atlas Resource Partners (NYSE: ARP  ) .
