Top Heal Care Stocks To Own For 2014

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, in honor of the season, our headlines are all vacation, all the time, as we check out a pair of price-target hikes for travel websites Travelzoo (NASDAQ: TZOO  ) and priceline.com (NASDAQ: PCLN  ) . But first, let's examine why one analyst thinks...

Carnival Cruise Lines is a shipwreck
Carnival Cruise Lines (NYSE: CCL  ) updated investors on its prospects -- or lack thereof -- yesterday, warning that revenues are likely to slip 2% to 3% in fiscal 2013, with earnings ranging from $1.45 to $1.65 per share. That's down from previous promises of only flat revenues, and earnings as high as $2.10.

The news shook Wall Street pretty badly, with William Blair, UBS, and HSBC pulling their buy ratings on the stock, and downgrading to various flavors of "hold." UBS, in particular, while admitting that it's closing the barn door after the earnings warning has already run down the country road, is quoted by StreetInsider.com today as worrying that "the worst is not behind Carnival just yet. We had maintained BUY after previous incidents with belief that perception issues would start to resolve going forward, but lower guidance tonight means bookings have gotten worse, not better, in the last few weeks."

Hot Consumer Companies To Buy For 2014

House Republicans rejected Monday evening Rep. Maxine Waters’ attempts to amend an appropriations bill by adding her user-fees legislation to help boost advisor exams as well as to ensure independent funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Then lawmakers rejected Tuesday by a vote of 184-235 Waters’ amendment that would have given the Securities and Exchange Commission the full funding of $1.7 billion requested in President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2015 budget.

The spending bill being considered “undermines the SEC,” Waters said, “by cutting nearly $300 million or nearly 20% from the requested level.”

The bill gives the SEC $1.4 billion, $50 million more than this year. The boost is targed at technology initiatives.

Waters’ bid to include her bill that would allow the SEC to collect user fees from advisors to help boost their exam frequency was ruled out of order by GOP lawmakers Monday evening.

Koss Corporation (KOSS) was no different because after looking over its balance sheet and profitability numbers I found substantial NOLs, little debt and reasonable profitability levels which usually are good signs that the company may be a good investment if the company is undervalued. This however is not an article about a company that I will ever invest in due to it being a grossly overvalued, dying company, which has major management concerns.

Advisors' Opinion:

The “drop” mentioned in this question referred to the correction in the prices of many domestic oil producer shares that I had warned was likely during our November web chat. But on Dec. 14, just two days after our latest chat, Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE: APC) suffered a far more worrisome drop. On that day a judge ruled that Anadarko is responsible for at least $5 billion and perhaps up to $14 billion of cleanup costs related to Tronox (NYSE: TROX), which was spun out of Kerr-McGee in 2005 and subsequently declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009.

  • [By Rich Smith]

Stamford, Conn.-based Tronox Limited (NYSE: TROX  ) has a new CFO.

Tronox announced this week that it has hired former Rio Tinto business development officer Katherine C. Harper to become its new Chief Financial Officer. In a statement, company CEO Tom Casey expressed confidence that "her deep knowledge in both sectors [the global mining and chemical industries], as! well as ! her work in international financial markets will help drive Tronox's strategic vision of growth and profitability."

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

Under the strain of the environmental liabilities, Kerr-McGee was forced to reorganize in 2001. As a result, it eventually spun off its chemicals business and a paint pigment plant into Tronox (TROX) in 2005. That spin-off took many of Kerr-McGees old environmental liabilities with it. Three months after it was complete, Anadarko offered to buy Kerr-McGees oil and gas assets. Tronox was later forced to file for bankruptcy under the weight of the fines and levies.

    Boring doesn't always mean "buy"
You may have heard me mention recently that boring industries can often make the most profitable industries. That is generally true, but it's not a rule! This is why packaging products maker Rock-Tenn (NYSE: RKT  ) has found its way onto my "sell-now" radar.

Shares of MeadWestvaco have jumped 4.6% to $37.29 today at 3:36 p.m. Other paper packaging companies, however, aren’t getting a boost from the news or from Merrill’s upgrade. Shares of Rock-Tenn (RKT) have dipped 0.1% to $100.34, International Paper (IP) has ticked up 0.1% to $48.74and Packaging Corp. of America (PKG) is little changed at $65.40.

Corbis Providing landline connectivity is a fading business, with more and more folks saving money by disconnecting their home phone plans, relying primarily on smartphones. It's a grim trend that would make this a scary area for shareholders, but good luck trying to tell income-chasing investors to stay away. Despite their dubious growth prospects, Frontier Communications (FTR), CenturyLink (CTL) and Windstream (WIN) have been attracting investors based of the strength of their generous quarterly distributions. Frontier and Windstream -- and to a lesser extent CenturyLink -- have tried to go where the big boys won't. They concentrate on smaller markets where traditional phone services are still in demand, and they don't have to compete as hard with the titans of telco. It's an interesting strategy. It has long-term flaws, but the three stocks are still magnetic to investors that put up with the shortcomings in exchange for fat dividend checks every three months. Yield Signs How meaty are the disbursements here? CenturyLink yields 5.9 percent, and it's at the low end of the niche. Windstream is the most generous payer with a hefty 9.9 percent payout. Frontier straddles the two with its 7 percent yield. All three reported quarterly results this week, giving the market some valuable insight on the sustainability of their popular distributions. It's important to remember that these three companies aren't merely selling landlines. You don't stick around if you're only selling buggy whips, Beanie Babies and Milli Vanillii CDs. Frontier, CenturyLink and Windstream are trying to offset the folks canceling their home phone lines and millennials who have no intention of ever having them by selling more relevant broadband connectivity. They also offer businesses a growing array of corporate communication services. For the most part, these efforts haven't been enough to grow the overall business. But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

Those of us who are members of this long-suffering, uncomplaining, self-sacrificing class may get some soggy French toast in bed, (don't worry, kids; mom will clean up the kitchen), a chance to read in peace, or perhaps time to indulge in a long, hot bath. Bringing Home the Bacon If you really want to pay back mom for all she's done, get ready to pony up big. A card and some carnations (the official flower of Mother's Day, who knew?) just won't cut it. These numbers are all up from last year's survey. Cooking It Up in a Pan Mom helps to pay for other things, too. In 2012, there were 10.3 million single U.S. mothers with children under 18, and one-third of women who gave birth in 2012 were single moms. Top Healthcare Technology Companies To Own For 2014

Citigroup (C) was gaining ground again Tuesday, following its Monday rally on better-than-expected first-quarter earnings, thanks to an upgrade from Sanford Bernstein.

Analyst John McDonald and his team upped their rating on the stock to Outperform from Market Perform, and increased their target price by $5 to $57. They write that the move comes as they have increased confidence in Citi ability to improve core efficiency and get on track to achieve a 0.9% return on assetsnd on their belief that the firm has addressed the Fed concerns, which puts it on the path to increasing the amount of cash it returns to shareholders.

They note that investors will need some patience to see all this happen, but see downside limited by growing book value and the company’s modest valuation. They applaud Citi upbeat first-quarter, which they believe demonstrated rogress on core expense controls, largely stable credit (ex-known items in Mexico), and continued growth in capital levels and book value per share./p>
